VI. Properties:
Glutaraldehyde is a colorless or pale yellow clear liquid with a slightly irritating, distinctive odor. It is soluble in water and organic solvents such as ether and ethanol. In aqueous solutions, it exists sparingly in free form, predominantly as various hydrates, mostly in cyclic hydrate forms. Glutaraldehyde is highly reactive, prone to polymerization and oxidation, and reacts with compounds containing active oxygen and nitrogen-containing compounds. Its reaction with proteins primarily involves the carbonyl group reacting with amino groups in protein molecules. Among known aldehydes, glutaraldehyde is an excellent protein crosslinking agent. It exhibits superior bactericidal properties and has minimal impact on enzyme activity; most enzymes can be immobilized and crosslinked under controlled conditions without deactivation. Due to its numerous excellent characteristics, glutaraldehyde has garnered significant attention and is widely applied.

It features low methanol content, no mutagenicity, no cumulative toxicity, and no eutrophication. Glutaraldehyde has broad applications in petroleum extraction, healthcare, biochemistry, protein crosslinking, and is extensively used in instrument sanitation, leather processing, plastics, adhesives, fuels, fragrances, textiles, papermaking, printing, photography, and more. It is also employed in synthesizing various organic reagents and producing heterocyclic compounds.
